Communication Minister Sam Nartey George is worried about missing personal data. This data was collected during a recent SIM registration exercise in Ghana.
On Joy News PM Express, he said the data's location is still unknown after two months.
“Some private app developer seems to have it,” he stated. He added that the developer claims they sent it to the telecom companies.
This uncertainty is alarming, according to the Minister. “Somebody has it. It’s sitting somewhere,” he said.
His comments come as public concern grows over digital security in Ghana. People are worried about how their personal information might be misused.
He revealed that the Data Protection Commission was not involved in collecting or handling this data. “They were completely cut out,” he said, emphasizing their lack of knowledge and role.
This oversight is both unacceptable and unlawful, he warned. “We have a Data Protection Act,” he noted.
He believes that once the Attorney General reviews all information, a clear decision will emerge based on existing laws.
The Ningo Prampram MP mentioned that this situation could lead to serious legal issues. “You talk about recklessness,” he bluntly stated, indicating accountability is needed.
Although his tenure at the Ministry has been less than nine weeks, Sam George recognizes the urgency of this issue.
“It’s still a work in progress,” he said, but added that many troubling questions remain unanswered.
