Deputy NDC General Secretary Mustapha Gbande has dismissed the NPP's protest. He stated that demonstrations cannot change legal matters.
On PM Express on Joy News, he spoke on May 5. He said citizens, including the NPP, have the right to protest. However, no number of demonstrators can override constitutional processes.
“The demonstrators derive their power from the Constitution,” he noted. “But certain processes must be followed for decisions.” He believes demonstrations lack enough structure to displace constitutionally mandated decisions.
Mustapha Gbande explained that President John Mahama's actions are consistent with the law. He urged those with concerns to let legal mechanisms work instead of protesting.
“We should respect the Constitution and allow processes to continue,” he said.
He also responded to comments from Andrew Egyapa Mercer of the NPP. “I heard my brother say they’ve gathered many people, which is good,” he remarked.
“Nobody underestimates the NPP and its members,” Mustapha Gbande added. “The party remains strong despite losing elections.”
He acknowledged that if their goal was to show popularity, it was their choice. However, it ultimately changed nothing.
“Perhaps they wanted to test their popularity, which is fine,” he said. “But there was no need for the demonstration in the first place.”
He rejected claims that the NPP could unilaterally assess the President’s actions regarding the Chief Justice.
“All discussions have already occurred; opinions vary,” he stated. “It is not up to the NPP or its members to determine if these processes comply with law.”
Mustapha Gbande called for all parties to respect constitutional procedures. He emphasized that democracy thrives on adherence to the rule of law, not just numbers or noise.
