'I believe NPP will come back into gov't in 2028' - Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is a 2024 presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He is confident the party can return to power in the 2028 elections.

Dr. Bawumia spoke to NPP members in London. He met with the party's diaspora branch during this meeting. He noted that historical trends favor opposition parties in Ghana.

He explained that it is hard for new candidates to win after two terms of a sitting president. This pattern gives him optimism about the NPP's chances in 2028.

Dr. Bawumia believes the National Democratic Congress (NDC) may struggle to keep its promises made before winning the 2024 election. He pointed out that they promised to reduce living costs, but prices are rising instead.

He apologized for the NPP’s poor performance in the last elections. “We did not get everything right,” he said, acknowledging mistakes made by the party.

Despite setbacks, he remains hopeful for the future. “If given another chance, we will do better,” he stated confidently.

After their defeat in 2024, a committee led by Professor Mike Oquaye investigated its causes. The committee has submitted its findings but has not shared them publicly.

In those elections, Mr. John Mahama of the NDC won decisively with over 6 million votes. Dr. Bawumia received around 4 million votes, resulting in significant losses for the NPP.
