Former Sekondi MP Andrew Egyapa Mercer criticized NPP critics. He believes they are hypocritical for supporting Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's suspension. This comes after they opposed the removal of Charlotte Osei.
Mercer spoke on Joy News’ PM Express on May 5. He questioned the moral consistency of those defending the current action. They once opposed similar moves against Osei.
He noted, “You hear our friends saying, ‘Oh, after all, you did it to Charlotte Osei.’” He highlighted the infighting at the Electoral Commission that led to her removal.
Mercer argued that those who condemned Osei’s ouster lack credibility now. He asked how they justify removing the Chief Justice. “Where is the principle?” he pressed.
He described this debate as a “chicken and egg” situation. Political convenience seems to guide their positions more than consistent values.
“If it suits you, then it’s fine,” he said. Mercer added that Ghanaians expected better from them.
He found it unacceptable for critics of Osei's exit to justify Torkornoo's suspension. This raises concerns about political interference in independent institutions.
Mercer stated that if they believed Osei’s removal was unfair, they should not repeat it in power. “But if they do… where are we headed as a country?” he asked.
On Monday, the NPP and other parties protested in Accra against Torkornoo's suspension. They called it an attack on judicial independence.
Critics accused the NPP of hypocrisy and trying to gain political points. For Mercer, true leadership requires consistency in principles, not convenience when in power.
“If there’s a path we want to go down as a country,” he concluded, “let’s be honest about it.”
