The Minister for Communications, Digitalisation, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, announced a national SIM card registration. This will start on July 1 this year.

During a press conference in Accra on April 9, Sam George explained the process. He emphasized that this is not a SIM re-registration. It is a 'proper' registration aimed at improving accessibility for all Ghanaians.

“We will begin public sensitization for the upcoming SIM registration,” he said. “Let’s be clear, I didn’t say re-registration. It’s proper SIM registration.”

Samuel George also mentioned plans for a Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR). This will be part of an update to Ghana's telecommunications system.

“We plan to roll out the CEIR on July 1,” he noted.

The Minister assured that the new process would reduce long queues and delays.

"There will be no long queues," he stated. "Ghanaians won’t need to leave work to register."

He highlighted that this is not a re-registration but a first-time proper registration of SIM cards.

The registration process will use technology to make it easier for citizens.

Sam George stressed that it would be “human-centred but technology-driven.” This means Ghanaians can register and verify their SIM cards from home.
