Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia spoke in London recently. He is the 2024 NPP flagbearer. He defended President Nana Akufo-Addo's government despite its challenges.
During a Thank You Tour event hosted by the Young Executive Forum, he expressed confidence in Akufo-Addo's legacy. He believes that time will reveal the administration’s positive impact.
Bawumia recalled how former President Kufuor was unpopular when he left office. However, Kufuor is now viewed as one of Ghana's most popular leaders. This change happened because people reflected on his accomplishments.
He expects similar appreciation for Akufo-Addo over time. Bawumia noted that comparisons with the current Mahama administration will help this perspective.
In a Q&A session, Bawumia acknowledged some failures of the NPP government. He admitted they did not get everything right and apologized for their mistakes.
Despite these shortcomings, he believes the NPP has learned valuable lessons. He expressed optimism about returning to power in 2028.
Bawumia pointed out signs of disillusionment under the new NDC government. He questioned their promises to lower living costs and prices in Ghana.
He highlighted unfulfilled promises from cocoa price hikes to illegal mining issues. According to him, it’s harder to maintain propaganda while in power than while in opposition.
He criticized the NDC’s 24-hour economy policy as unrealistic due to ongoing power outages (dumsor). Bawumia warned Ghanaians about this issue before it became apparent.
He also mentioned that the NPP could benefit from a new NDC presidential candidate in 2028. The NDC may need to find someone new since Mahama has been their main candidate for years.
While he did not officially announce his candidacy for 2028, his comments hinted at future ambitions. Bawumia expressed confidence in winning and called for support from party members.
