A Rocha Ghana, an environmental organization, is worried about illegal mining. They say the fight against galamsey is failing under the new government.
Daryl Bosu, the Deputy National Director of A Rocha Ghana, spoke at a dialogue in Kumasi. He warned that citizens must demand accountability and action. Otherwise, the country may face another four years of environmental degradation.
Mr. Bosu criticized the government's approach as ineffective and repetitive. He believes it is filled with excuses.
He stated, "The previous government tried their best, but it was not enough. The new government seems to be following the same path to failure." He urged citizens to support efforts against illegal mining.
Mr. Bosu mentioned past campaigns like Galamstop and Operation Vanguard. He argued these initiatives produced little sustainable results. The current government's early actions suggest they are recycling failed strategies instead of introducing new ones.
He said, "This new government intended to reset things, but it’s not going well." He expressed concern over their tendency to make excuses.
Additionally, he condemned the plan to deport foreign nationals involved in illegal mining without prosecution. He called this move unjust and counterproductive.
"It is unfair that Ghanaians face prosecution while foreigners are simply deported," he said. This practice undermines justice and fails to deter illegal activities.
A Rocha Ghana urges a comprehensive review of the anti-galamsey strategy. They advocate for transparent enforcement and equal application of laws. They also call for more citizen-driven environmental advocacy.
