A former President of the Ghana Bar Association, Samuel Okudzeto, has expressed concerns about the suspension of the Chief Justice. He believes this action sends negative signals to the world. It could harm Ghana’s reputation and economy.
Okudzeto spoke on PM Express on Joy News Tuesday night. He noted that while the suspension is constitutional, it may damage Ghana's image internationally. “When you suspend a Chief Justice, it sends serious signals,” he said.
He emphasized that Ghana must consider the international implications of such actions. “Many investors will withhold their investments due to this situation,” he warned.
The suspension follows President John Mahama's formation of a five-member committee. This committee will investigate petitions against the Chief Justice. It includes prominent figures from various sectors like law and academia.
Okudzeto cautioned that legal provisions alone are insufficient; execution matters too. “Even if it follows constitutional provisions, you must handle it carefully,” he stated.
He explained that both diplomatic and investor communities closely observe justice administration in Ghana. “Studying international relations reveals the intricacies involved,” he added.
Timing and optics are crucial alongside process, according to Okudzeto. “It’s not about whether to handle it but how you do so,” he said.
He warned that Ghana risks being perceived as politically unstable regarding judicial independence. This perception could mislead the international community about justice delivery in Ghana.
“That is my concern regarding sensitivity in this matter,” he concluded.
