'We still don’t know why he was taken' – NPP protests Wontumi’s Rambo-style arrest

The opposition NPP has criticized the “Rambo-style” arrest of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Bosiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi. They demand immediate clarity on why he was detained.

On Tuesday, party National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye spoke to the media. He expressed concern about the arrest and the lack of official communication regarding the investigation.

“I can confirm that he’s there,” Nana Boakye said. “I’m told he’s with Andrew Appiah Kubi. We don’t know what he’s being investigated for.”

He added that they are prepared to stay overnight at the EOCO headquarters.

The NPP claims to be law-abiding and willing to cooperate with investigations. However, they strongly oppose what they call political harassment.

“We will resist any form of political harassment,” Boakye stated.

He recounted how Chairman Wontumi complied with a previous Police CID invitation. But things changed dramatically when he was leaving.

“Just as he was exiting, four pickups with armed men arrived,” Boakye explained. “They dragged Chairman Wontumi into one of the pickups.”

The NPP leadership tried to see Wontumi but were denied access.

“We were allowed into the reception area,” Boakye said. “Then we were told we could not see him.”

He described the arrest as deliberately humiliating.

“Why invite him and then arrest him in such a dramatic way?” he asked. “What is wrong with scheduling another date?”

Nana Boakye accused the current NDC government of creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.

“The NDC government is taking us back to dark days,” he said. “This is not why many Ghanaians voted for President Mahama.”

He emphasized their support for accountability but condemned political victimization and harassment.

Boakye dismissed claims that supporters outside the CID headquarters were affecting Wontumi’s release.

“I don’t think so,” he said. “We need to show our support and register our displeasure.”

As night fell, more NPP supporters gathered outside EOCO headquarters. The party signaled it would not back down until they received answers.

“We still haven’t been informed about the reason for this investigation,” Nana Boakye stressed. “That alone raises serious questions.”
