1,000 maternal deaths recorded in Ashanti Region – GHS

In a concerning report, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has revealed that the Ashanti Region recorded over 1,000 maternal deaths in 2022. This alarming figure underscores significant challenges facing maternal healthcare in the area. The GHS attributes these fatalities to various factors, including inadequate access to quality healthcare services, socio-economic disparities, and cultural practices that hinder timely medical intervention.

Dr. Emmanuel Kofi Osei, Director of Public Health at GHS, emphasized the urgent need for improved healthcare infrastructure and community awareness programs to address these issues. He highlighted that many women do not receive necessary prenatal care or attend health facilities during childbirth due to financial constraints or misinformation about available services.

The report calls for a collaborative effort between government agencies, health professionals, and community leaders to enhance maternal health education and ensure that women have timely access to healthcare resources. As Ghana strives toward achieving better health outcomes for mothers and children, addressing these barriers remains crucial in reducing maternal mortality rates in the region.
