President John Dramani Mahama has assured that the energy sector levy will not raise fuel prices.
He explained that the ₵1 ‘dumsor levy’ was a tough but necessary choice. Mahama emphasized that this levy is justifiable and essential for Ghana.
During a presentation at the Jubilee House, he stated, “This was not a decision we took lightly.” He urged Ghana to leverage recent currency gains to address energy challenges.
The Energy Sector Levy Amendment Bill 2025 proposes a GH¢1 increase on petroleum products.
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia criticized the NDC government for introducing this new levy. He claimed it is eight times higher than the previous e-levy.
Bawumia noted that with the e-levy, sending GHC 1000 via mobile money costs GHC 10. In contrast, buying GHC 1000 worth of fuel incurs GHC 83 in new taxes.
Speaking during his NPP Thank You Tour, he accused the NDC of lying about their tax policies. He said they promised to scrap the e-levy but instead introduced a much higher dumsor levy.
Bawumia warned that more taxes are likely coming in the future. He believes by 2028, Ghanaians will realize many promises made by the NDC were false.
