The National Service Authority (NSA) will start a military training program. This pilot program begins on August 3, 2025. It aims to train at least 10,000 National Service Personnel. The NSA plans to make this training mandatory next year.
Felix Gyamfi is the acting Director-General of the NSA. He spoke with JoyNews on #GhanaConnect about the program. He said the training will promote discipline and patriotism. It will also prepare young people for national development goals.
The training focuses on emergency response and societal challenges. These include illegal mining, poor sanitation, and environmental degradation. Mr. Gyamfi emphasized the need to combat illegal mining (galamsey). He noted that these issues require more than just education.
“They need physical and mental discipline,” he explained. With this training, young people will learn to be punctual and prepared.
The training will last at least six weeks. It will be conducted in partnership with the Ghana Armed Forces. Personnel will be deployed to military barracks across the country.
This year's pilot program is voluntary but expects high interest. Participants will come from various fields like agriculture, health, and policing.
Next year’s national service cohort must complete this training. It may be integrated into the service calendar as a requirement.
“If not all personnel undergo it this year, it becomes mandatory next year,” Mr. Gyamfi stated. The program might start earlier, with six weeks of training during service time.
