Outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, spoke about tariffs. She believes Ghana can benefit from recent U.S. tariff adjustments. These changes are favorable compared to other countries.
In an interview on Channel One TV, she explained the situation. Ghana faces a 10% tariff on exports to the U.S. However, this rate is better than those for some competitors. For example, Bangladesh and Vietnam face tariffs of 47% and 63%.
Ambassador Palmer noted that around 60 countries have higher tariffs than Ghana. This gives Ghana a potential advantage in global trade. She hopes Ghana will highlight this to U.S. lawmakers before September 2025.
She encouraged proactive engagement with U.S. lawmakers regarding tariffs. The current tariff framework expires later this year.
