Ten people are feared dead in a car accident. The crash involved a VVIP bus traveling from Tamale to Kumasi. The accident occurred at Alipe on the Tamale-Buipe Highway in the Savannah Region.
Police at the scene rescued the injured and took them for treatment. They were waiting for personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service to arrive. The fire service was called to tow the bus and help remove those trapped inside.
Survivors told JoyNews they left Tamale around 7:32 am today. It was raining as they headed toward Kumasi. When they reached Alipe, their driver tried to overtake another vehicle but lost control. The bus veered off the road, causing the accident.
Amatus Kargu, a survivor, said there were fifteen missionaries on board. He explained that after overtaking one car, they attempted to pass another but failed. Three of their colleagues are trapped under the bus while others were rushed to the hospital.
Our cameras captured about ten bodies at the scene, mostly men. Some body parts were trapped under the bus's tires or metal frame.
Earlier, there was another accident involving a Toyota pick-up truck with registration number GV123-21. The driver reported he was alone and heading toward Buipe when he lost control and capsized. Fortunately, he was unharmed.
The driver noted that sandy road conditions affected his control of the vehicle. He mentioned losing control at the same spot where the bus later veered off.
Commercial drivers at the scene blamed sand on the road for making it slippery. They said tipper truck operators often deposit sand on roads, creating dangerous conditions.
As our news team left after an hour, no fire officers had arrived yet to assist with lifting the overturned bus and freeing those trapped underneath it.
