President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana announced progress against illegal mining.
He stated that seven out of nine forest reserves have been reclaimed. This effort aims to combat illegal mining and protect the environment.
To show commitment, the government introduced a new law in Parliament. This law removes the president's power to allow mining in forest reserves.
"We promised to ban illegal mining and protect our forests," he said. "We also launched Tree for Life and Blue Water initiatives for environmental healing."
In just 120 days, decisive actions have been taken. The government is using a five-pronged strategy to improve the mining sector. This includes regulatory reforms, stronger law enforcement, and collaboration with stakeholders.
Illegal miners have been removed from these forest reserves. On March 20, a legislative instrument called LI2462 was presented to Parliament. This amendment changes regulations on environmental protection in forest reserves.
It takes away the president's approval power for mining activities there. The president also plans to amend the Minerals and Mining Act of 2003. This will effectively ban all mining in Ghana's forest reserves, he explained while addressing Ghanaians.
