1992 to date, not a single NPP member has been jailed for corruption or causing financial loss – Awal Mohammed

Awal Mohammed, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), shared surprising news. He stated that since 1992, no NPP member has been jailed for corruption. His comments follow the recent $2 million Sky Train scandal. The Attorney General has filed charges against those involved.

The charges target Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi and Solomon Asamoah. They relate to a $2 million payment made in 2019 for an unexecuted urban Sky Train project in Accra. Reports indicate this payment lacked necessary board approval.

Court documents reveal that the funds were disbursed in February 2019 without authorization. This violation has led to criminal proceedings against both men. Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi claims he approved the transfer based on Asamoah's recommendation.

Neither man has accounted for the missing funds. Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi was arrested but later released on bail. He was implicated in the failed $3 billion Accra Sky Train project.

The Attorney General recently briefed the media about ongoing investigations. They confirmed that the $2 million payment was made without board approval. Only Asamoah and Ameyaw-Akumfi acted on this payment.

Some board members are willing to testify as witnesses for the prosecution. Solomon Asamoah was granted bail after his arrest on May 13, 2025. His bail amount is GH¢15 million.

Ameyaw-Akumfi did not attend court due to health issues during this hearing.
