2 Nigerian Women Remanded for allegedly engaging in human trafficking

Two Nigerian nationals have been remanded into police custody. The Accra Circuit Court 5 is handling their case. They are accused of being part of a human trafficking syndicate in Ghana.

The accused are Chidemma Nweke, 24, also known as Mama, and Mery Francis, 27, known as Gina or Blessing. They were arrested at Wassa Akropong in the Western North Region. This followed a police operation by the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the CID.

The case began when Chief Calistus Eloziepuwa reported it on April 7, 2025. He accompanied a young victim to the authorities. The victim escaped with help from a Good Samaritan and reached Accra.

During her police interview, the victim revealed more victims were still held captive. They were located in Asuogya Krobo, near Wassa Akropong. Acting on this information, police launched an operation on April 10, 2025.

This operation rescued six additional victims and led to the arrest of Nweke and Francis. Preliminary investigations showed that Nweke lured the victim from Nigeria with false job promises. Upon arrival in Ghana, she was forced into prostitution while Nweke collected all earnings.

Francis managed the brothel and encouraged Nweke to sell the victim. She facilitated this sale for GH¢5,000 and took GH¢500 for herself to renovate her pub. Investigators found that Francis traveled to Nigeria to recruit more women under similar false promises.

Two additional victims were rescued during this operation. Presiding judge Her Honour Christiana Cann remanded both accused into custody. They will reappear in court on April 29, 2025 as investigations continue to find other accomplices.
