2 men imprisoned for stealing television

Accra Circuit Court

A Circuit Court in Accra has sentenced two men. Isaac Bortey, known as “Brown,” and David Abu Bonnah received three months in prison each. They pleaded guilty to unlawful entry, stealing, and dishonestly receiving stolen property.

The incident happened on May 17, 2025, in Nungua, Greater Accra Region. Isaac Bortey is a 28-year-old factory worker. He unlawfully entered the home of Vida Lomotey at around 3:16 a.m. He stole a black 32-inch Samsung television worth GH¢1,500.

Bortey had no permission to be on the property. He removed the wall-mounted TV while caretaker Albert Alabi Tsokosi slept nearby. The theft went unnoticed until later when Lomotey identified Bortey with help from another witness.

On May 28, 2025, they arrested Bortey and handed him over to the police. During questioning, he admitted to stealing the TV and selling it to David Abu Bonnah. Abu Bonnah is a 52-year-old trader living in Nungua.

Abu Bonnah was arrested on May 30, 2025, after investigations. Both men faced charges under the Criminal Offences Act of 1960 (Act 29). Bortey was charged with unlawful entry and stealing; Abu Bonnah was charged with dishonestly receiving stolen property.

In court, both men pleaded guilty without contest. Judge Susana Eduful noted they were first-time offenders. She considered the value of the stolen item before sentencing them.

The judge imposed a three-month custodial sentence for each man. The court aimed to deter similar crimes while balancing justice for first-time offenders.
