2 remanded for illegally transiting ammunitions at Aflao

The Denu-Torkor Circuit Court in the Volta Region has remanded two suspects. They are accused of transporting ammunition from Aflao, Ghana to Lome, Togo.

The suspects are Yameglo Kossi and 46-year-old Nyameglo Kossi Attitsogbe. Nyameglo is identified as the main suspect.

They were arrested along an unapproved route called Beat 7. The main suspect was allegedly transporting concealed ammunition on a tricycle operated by Yameglo.

Authorities retrieved 29 packs of ammunition. This included 25 rounds of AAA Redstar shotgun cartridges hidden in four sacks with clothing and personal items.

The operation was led by the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA). They collaborated with the Ghana Police Service, Customs Division, Immigration Service, and Defense Intelligence.

Investigations revealed that Nyameglo bought the ammunition from a licensed dealer in Accra. This dealer was found to be non-compliant with regulations.

The dealer sold more than the legally permitted limit of ammunition. The suspects will return to court on April 24, 2025, as police continue their investigation.

NACSA is working with police to identify others involved in illegal arms trafficking.

According to NACSA's release, this interception highlights the need for cross-agency collaboration. It emphasizes vigilance in border communities against illicit arms trafficking.

The Small Arms Commission urges all licensed dealers to follow regulations strictly. Compliance is essential to prevent arms diversion that could lead to organized crime and conflict.

They also encourage the public to report information about arms. Citizens can contact National Security at 999 or Ghana Police at 18555. Alternatively, they can reach out to the Small Arms Commission via WhatsApp at +233599070944.
