Two Ghanaian women were lured to Nigeria through a romance scam. They were held captive by a criminal group but have now returned safely to Accra.
Evelyn Serwaa Konadu and Anatasia Baidoo arrived at Kotoka International Airport on May 9, 2025. Both women are in stable condition and will receive medical care. They will also go through police procedures for ongoing investigations, according to DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor.
She warned the public about rising online fraud, especially romance scams. Ghanaians should be cautious when interacting with strangers online. She advised against sharing personal or financial information with unknown people.
The Director-General expressed gratitude to the Nigeria Police Force and the National Signals Bureau for their support.
Before their rescue, a disturbing video surfaced on social media. It showed one woman bound and assaulted by unidentified individuals. Investigations confirmed she was deceived into traveling to Nigeria for a fake romantic relationship.
Upon arrival, she was abducted and assaulted. The footage was sent to her family along with a ransom demand. Further investigations revealed that another Ghanaian woman had been lured by the same group.
Both victims were held together and faced similar abuse. Their families reportedly made partial ransom payments before police intervened for their rescue.
The successful operation involved collaboration between the Ghana Police Service, Nigeria Police Force, and the National Signals Bureau.
