20% of installed streetlights stolen – A Regional Minister

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, is worried about theft. She also serves as the Member of Parliament for Shai-Osudoku.

Ocloo reported that 20 percent of streetlights in her constituency have been stolen.

During a recent media tour, she said, “We are losing about 20 percent of fixed streetlights to theft.” She called this situation unacceptable and a setback for infrastructure improvement.

Her comments came during the confirmation of Fred Ignatius Dodoe as District Chief Executive (DCE) for Shai-Osudoku.

Despite her appeal for support, Dodoe did not get enough votes. He received 17 ‘Yes’ votes but had 15 ‘No’ votes against him.

Ocloo stressed the need for unity among Assembly Members and appointees. She urged them to support the President’s nominees to boost development.

“Confirming the President’s nominee is not just about politics,” she stated. “It’s about empowering local leadership to deliver real progress.”

She also raised concerns about vote manipulation. Ocloo claimed some candidates are offering money to influence Assembly Members.

“We have received information that some individuals are paying ‘losing bonuses’,” she revealed.

“If Shai-Osudoku refuses to confirm the nominee, we may need to appoint someone from outside the district.”

As part of her tour, Madam Ocloo visited several assemblies including Shai-Osudoku, Adentan, and La Nkwantanang-Madina. She was accompanied by officials from the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council.

While Shai-Osudoku's nomination ended in a stalemate, Adentan and La Nkwantanang-Madina confirmed their nominees successfully.

Ella Esinam Nongo was confirmed as Municipal Chief Executive for Adentan. Fuseini Ibrahim Faila was also confirmed and sworn in as MCE for La Nkwantanang-Madina.
