2024 election violence: Interior Minister directs Police to begin prosecution of suspects

The Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, has given the Ghana Police Service a directive. They must start legal proceedings against those involved in election violence. This follows rising concerns about violence during the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Election.

Such violence has harmed the electoral process and caused public unrest in many areas. During a visit to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, Mubarak emphasized accountability. He stated that these actions damage democracy and public trust in elections.

"We cannot allow violence to be a recurring issue," he said. He urged police to present videos of suspects for prosecution. The order focuses on individuals identified in ongoing investigations.

Authorities have gathered significant evidence against several people. This includes video footage showing ballot box tampering and clashes between political factions. The police have been instructed to speed up the legal process.
