Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin criticized the 2025 budget. He called it uninspiring and a failure for the private sector.
For two weeks, Parliament has debated the budget statement. Lawmakers are expected to pass the Appropriation Act by Friday.
In the final session of debate, Afenyo-Markin said the budget is full of contradictions. He believes it does not provide meaningful solutions for economic growth.
He stated that the budget aims to "kill private sector initiative." He questioned what initiatives exist for the private sector.
Afenyo-Markin also asked about the role of the Trade Minister. He mentioned an adviser for the 24-Hour Economy and questioned their purpose. He noted many advisors at the Office of the Vice President.
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga responded to these claims. He accused Afenyo-Markin of misunderstanding how budgets function.
Ayariga defended the budget as a "promise-fulfilling document." He said it shows the government's commitment to economic recovery.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson urged all MPs to support the budget. He emphasized that implementing it is crucial for sustainable economic growth.
Forson described the budget as people-centered with innovative solutions. It aims to address deep-seated socio-economic issues and create business growth opportunities.
He assured that they will consider constructive criticisms from Parliament. The goal is to reset Ghana's economy and achieve key targets this year.
