2025 Unity Cup: Big winners from Ghana’s defeat against Nigeria

Ghana lost 2-1 to Nigeria, a disappointing night for many players.

However, some players showed promise for future roles on the team.

Christopher Bonsu Baah

Bonsu displayed pace, skill, and tenacity. He worked hard like a Brazilian winger. In the first half, Ghana's midfield struggled. The entire team faltered as well.

Bonsu dropped into space but lacked support to create chances. He often held onto the ball too long and ran into traffic. Still, he consistently took on defenders and got past them.

In the second half, Caleb Yirenkyi joined the game and occupied wide areas. This allowed Bonsu’s positioning to become more effective in midfield. His best moment was a perfect cross to Jordan Ayew after creating space.

His timing was crucial; delaying would have led to a blocked angle. Instead, he delivered an excellent cross that found Ayew perfectly.

This debut was one of the most exciting since Christian Atsu's in 2012. Ghanaians will want to see Bonsu again.

Brandon Thomas-Asante

In his third cap for Ghana, Asante looked comfortable on the field. His hold-up play helped teammates advance upfield effectively. His confidence and spatial awareness were impressive.

He knew where to position himself when teammates had the ball. Such strikers are challenging for defenders who must decide how to react.

If defenders chase him away from their positions, they risk leaving gaps open. This happened in the 70th minute when Semi Ajayi lost track of Asante.

Asante made a great run into space and executed a precise touch on Ebenezer Annan’s cross. Nwabali had no chance against his effort.

Ten minutes later, Nwabali saved another shot from Asante’s clever turn and strike from distance.

Before this match, there was curiosity about Asante's potential with more playing time. After this performance, he deserves more opportunities.

Caleb Yirenkyi

Yirenkyi's introduction reminded fans of past struggles at right-back positions. Many were anxious about his role due to previous experiences with other players.

Despite concerns, Yirenkyi excelled in his audition as a wing-back. He provided width during attacks and defended well against Nigerian counterattacks.

His interventions prevented Nigeria from extending their lead despite having chances. He combined effectively with Bonsu down Ghana’s right side.

Yirenkyi showed composure in possession while knowing when to speed up play. He also moved centrally at times, allowing Majeed Ashimeru to push forward effectively.

Yirenkyi has earned his spot in future call-ups and should play in his natural position next time.
