The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Sam George Nartey, confirmed a medical incident. It involved 22 pupils from Prampram D/A Basic A and Methodist Freeman Basic School. The students reportedly consumed a suspected contaminated local drink called Asana.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Minister expressed concern about the situation. He assured that immediate steps were taken for the affected students' medical care. “I have followed up with the Education Directorate and the Medical Director for Prampram Polyclinic,” he said.
A total of 22 children were treated. Of these, 21 were discharged for further observation. One child was admitted overnight as a precaution.
The vendor of the suspected drink is assisting health authorities with investigations. Samples have been sent to a laboratory to determine the cause of contamination.
Mr. Nartey thanked Prampram Polyclinic for their quick response and professionalism. He extended his well wishes to the recovering pupils, saying, “I wish the children a speedy recovery.”
Authorities stated that investigations are ongoing. Parents have been assured that all necessary health protocols are being followed to prevent future incidents.
