President John Mahama has announced progress on his 24-hour economy policy. This is a key promise from his campaign. He made this announcement within his first 120 days in office.
"The program rollout has begun," President Mahama stated.
He confirmed that Cabinet approved important amendments to two laws. These are the Ghana Investment Promotion Center Act and the Labor Act.
"These changes will enhance social protection and support business relations," he explained.
Several government agencies have started operating 24/7 with positive results. The Ghana Investment Promotion Center now offers 24-hour premium services for investors.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also launched a 24-hour passport service. Meanwhile, the DVLA extended hours to clear an 18-month backlog of licenses.
The employment potential of this policy is becoming evident. "The Youth Employment Agency will launch a program for graduates," the President announced.
This program aims to connect graduates with firms that operate around the clock, targeting 20,000 graduates.
To support nighttime operations, security measures are being put in place. "The police service is creating a 24-hour unit for better night patrols," Mahama stated.
Energy incentives are also being developed to encourage participation in this policy. "The Minister of Energy is working on smart metering with lower rates during off-peak hours," he revealed.
"This will provide direct incentives for businesses involved in the 24-hour economy."
There is already strong interest from the private sector. "Many businesses want to join this policy," Mahama noted.
"We aim to create new jobs and expand opportunities for young graduates." He emphasized that empowering the private sector is crucial for sustainable job creation.
Looking ahead, President Mahama said: "This program aims to transform our economy." It focuses on revamping key sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism.
