The Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has ordered a raid on an illegal mining site at Bui Sobinso. This operation led to the arrest of 24 people. Among those arrested are 14 Chinese nationals and 10 Ghanaians.
A police team conducted the raid, consisting of six senior officers and 130 personnel. This action is a significant step in fighting illegal mining in Ghana.
During the raid, police seized four pump-action guns and three pickup trucks. These vehicles belonged to the Chinese suspects. They also recovered two excavators from the site.
Authorities are working to secure nine more excavators left behind by fleeing miners. The Bui Sobinso site has been under surveillance for its severe environmental damage.
The IGP’s team acted on intelligence as part of a seven-day crackdown on galamsey operations. They also found another suspected illegal mining hub near Subinso. However, suspects fled before police arrived.
All arrested individuals and seized items have been taken to the Bono Regional Police Headquarters. They will be sent to Accra for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Police Service states that operations will continue vigorously to combat illegal mining and protect the environment.
