24-hour economy “atɔ nsuom”- Afenyo-Markin teases Mahama

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has criticized President John Mahama. He mocked the President's 24-Hour Economy initiative. Afenyo-Markin called it a “political gimmick.” He believes the government has not delivered on its promises to Ghanaians. He joked that the initiative has "fallen into the water."

Afenyo-Markin spoke at a press conference after Mahama's address. He said, “It is rich to hear the President mention the 24-Hour Economy.” He referred to it as “1,3,3: one job, three shifts.” He questioned what was actually achieved and remarked on another committee being formed for this initiative.

In response, President Mahama announced progress on his 24-hour economy policy. During his address on May 7, he stated that implementation had begun. He promised legal amendments would be drafted within 120 days. These changes aim to enhance social protection and improve business relations.

Mahama highlighted several initiatives already underway. The Ghana Investment Promotion Center launched premium services for investors. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs introduced a 24-hour passport service. Additionally, the DVLA extended hours to clear an 18-month backlog of licenses.

The Youth Employment Agency plans to launch a program for graduates. This program will connect them with firms operating around the clock and target 20,000 graduates. Mahama also mentioned establishing a 24-hour police unit for better night patrols.

He revealed plans for smart metering with lower rates during off-peak hours. Many businesses are interested in joining this policy initiative. The goal is to create jobs and empower the private sector for sustainable growth.

Mahama concluded by stating that this program aims to transform key sectors like agriculture and tourism.
