The Ghana Police Service has arrested 38 suspects in anti-galamsey operations. These operations took place across the Western, Ashanti, and Central regions. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) ordered the crackdown on illegal mining activities.
The raids targeted illegal mining near communities, highways, and public infrastructure. The goal was to address the resurgence of galamsey. This illegal mining causes environmental destruction and threatens water bodies.
Western Region: 13 Arrested at Huniso
A major raid occurred at Huniso near Tarkwa. Thirteen suspects were arrested during this police operation. Regional security forces led the operation. The Tarkwa Circuit Court remanded the suspects until June 6, 2025. This raid aims to dismantle illegal mining networks in the area.
Ashanti Region: Galamsey at School Site in Akrokerri
In the Ashanti Region, police raided an illegal site near a school. The site is just 200 meters from Asare Bediako Senior High School in Akrokerri. Miners used explosives that damaged both land and school property. ACP Joseph Nyaaba led a tactical team to arrest nine suspects working there.
Central Region: River Offin Under Threat
On May 29, police raided another illegal mining operation in Dunkwa-On-Offin. Superintendent David Ashong and ASP Emmanuel Bruce led this operation. They arrested two miners, Samuel Ankamah and Daniel Agyeman, for operating excavators along River Offin. Both suspects and their equipment are now in police custody as investigations continue.
