Three people have died in the Adentan Municipality due to severe flooding. This includes a four-year-old girl. The flooding occurred after heavy rains on Sunday, May 18.
Ella Esiman Nongo, the Municipal Chief Executive for Adentan, shared this news on Monday. She confirmed the fatalities during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show.
The victims were found in different areas: Lakeside, Nanakrom, and New Legon. “In Lakeside, we lost two people,” Madam Nongo said. One victim was a girl from Nanakrom and another was a man near New Legon.
The floods followed nearly three hours of rain that started around 3:00 p.m. Many communities in Accra were affected. Areas like Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Tema, and Adenta-Dodowa experienced significant flooding.
Roads became impassable and vehicles were abandoned. The Odaw drain overflowed due to rising stormwater. Emergency response teams helped residents in need.
Madam Nongo reported that most stranded individuals in Ashiyie had been rescued. However, she expressed concern about ongoing dangers from flooding.
She noted that homes built on natural waterways worsen the situation. “There is no exit route for water when it rains,” she explained.
Authorities are assessing the damage and urging caution for residents in flood-prone areas. More rain is expected to continue in the coming days.
