40 sacked workers sue govt for wrongful termination

Forty former public sector employees have taken legal action against the government, alleging wrongful and politically motivated dismissals.

The affected workers, hired in 2024, claim their terminations violated constitutional provisions and due process.

Their dismissals followed a directive from Chief of Staff Julius Debrah on February 10, 2025, which ordered the revocation of all public sector appointments made after December 7, 2024—Ghana’s election day.

The directive, intended to uphold good governance, deemed the late-stage appointments under the previous NPP administration irregular.

However, the plaintiffs, represented by Dame and Partners, argue that the dismissals were unconstitutional.

The lawsuit names the Attorney General and six state agencies, including the Ghana Revenue Authority and the National Health Insurance Authority, as defendants.

The plaintiffs seek a court ruling declaring their dismissals unlawful, reinstatement, and compensation for damages.

Tafo MP Ekow Vincent Assafuah has condemned the move, claiming that beyond the 40 plaintiffs, at least 5,000 public servants have been affected.

The government has yet to respond, but the case is expected to be a significant legal battle with implications for public service employment in Ghana.
