453 ‘Blue Water Guards’ pass-out after 4-weeks training

A total of 453 personnel from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources have completed training. They participated in the Blue Water Initiative at the Ghana Navy Forward Base in Ezilibo. This training lasted four weeks and was intensive.

The trainees, known as Blue Water Guards, underwent a three-phase program. This included theoretical, physical, and practical components. They will be deployed within one week to assist the Ghana Navy.

Their mission is to protect major rivers from illegal miners, called galamseyers. This initial group of 453 is part of a larger goal of 2,000 guards. These personnel will be stationed along key rivers like Ankobra, Pra, Fia, Tano, and Bonsa.

Five Naval Operational Bases will manage their operations for effective surveillance. The Blue Water Guard Initiative was launched on March 17. Its goal is to monitor Ghana’s water bodies around the clock.

This initiative aims to combat illegal mining activities and protect the environment. It also seeks to restore Ghana’s increasingly polluted water resources.
