5 killed in violent Nsawam sand dispute as police begin probe

The Eastern South Regional Police Command is investigating a fatal shooting. This incident occurred on Tuesday, 29 April 2025, in Asiyaw, near Akwane-Dobro. Five individuals lost their lives in this tragic event.

A forensic team was sent to the scene. They found five adult males with gunshot wounds. The police have expressed concerns about rising tensions in the area.

These tensions are linked to illegal sand winning activities. Items recovered from the scene include two Toyota trucks and a pump-action shotgun. The shotgun was loaded with 17 live cartridges and had four spent cartridges.

Additionally, three empty 7.62/39mm shells, one 9mm shell, and five heavy-duty motorbikes were found. Initial findings indicate a violent clash between rival factions over sand mining control.

The deceased bodies have been taken to the Police Hospital mortuary in Accra. They will undergo preservation, formal identification, and autopsy procedures.
