The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has expressed alarm over the rising deaths among its officers, with 29 active personnel and 21 retirees passing away in 2023 alone.

Speaking at a remembrance service in Accra, Retired Deputy Commissioner Ernest Samuel Ackwerh attributed the high mortality rate to the stress of meeting demanding revenue targets.

Ackwerh criticized the annual medical bill reimbursement of GH¢1,500 for retirees, calling it insufficient amid high healthcare costs.

While commending plans for a 500-bed hospital for officers, he proposed a special health insurance scheme to address immediate medical needs.

Customs Commissioner Brigadier General Bawa Zibrim Ayorrogo assured officers of measures to improve their welfare, including pursuing the hospital project and advocating for a dedicated cemetery to honor deceased personnel.
