500,000 youth apprenticeship  programme takes off

President John Dramani Mahama announced a plan to train 500,000 Ghanaian youth. This training will occur over the next five years.

The initiative is called the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP). The first group will include 10,000 trainees from all regions. Eventually, this number will increase to 100,000 beneficiaries each year.

Training areas will cover various crafts. These include agriculture, fish farming, and poultry farming. Other areas are masonry, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work.

Additional skills offered will be pottery making and bead making. Trainees can also learn weaving, leather works, dressmaking, and hairdressing. Other options include cosmetics, welding, furniture making, auto mechanics, and basic robotics.

President Mahama launched the NAP in Tamale on Wednesday. The theme for the launch was “Skills for Prosperity; Empowering Ghana’s Future.”
