Kodua Frimpong, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), criticized the ₵50 million bail for Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. He called it “absurd” and politically motivated.
Frimpong spoke to NPP supporters outside the EOCO headquarters. He stated, “This ₵50 million bail? It’s not justice—it’s a trap.” He claimed that authorities want to keep Chairman Wontumi locked up. He described this situation as an abuse of power.
He accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of targeting NPP leaders using state institutions. “Have you ever seen this happen before?” he asked the crowd, who responded with disapproval. Frimpong said, “The NDC is using EOCO and the police to intimidate us.” He reminded them that power is not permanent.
Frimpong warned the NDC about their actions against opponents. “If you use power to torment your opponents today,” he said, “don’t complain tomorrow when the tables turn.” He added that even if it takes eight years for NPP to return to power, they will remember how they are treated now.
Supporters cheered in response to his remarks.
Chairman Wontumi is under investigation for fraud and money laundering. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is also pursuing asset recovery actions related to this case. This situation has heightened tensions between Ghana's two major political parties, with the NPP accusing the NDC of witch-hunting.
