51% of houses in Greater Kumasi have no toilet facilities at their disposal

51% of Compound Houses in Greater Kumasi Lack Toilet Facilities

The government has been working to ensure all homes have toilet facilities. This effort focuses on shared compounds and low-income communities.

The Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) Sanitation and Water Project aims to improve sanitation and water supply. It started in Accra and will now be implemented in the Ashanti region.

A report from 3news.com states that over 50% of residents in compound houses in Greater Kumasi lack access to toilets. Officials from the Greater Kumasi Sanitation and Water Project revealed this information. The absence of toilets forces many to rely on public facilities or use unapproved places for waste disposal.

Following the success of the project in Accra, the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources decided to replicate it in Kumasi. With government support, they secured $50 million from the World Bank for this initiative.

The project launched in 2020 is set to begin implementation in October 2021 and will run until 2024. It aims to increase access to sanitation services, especially in low-income areas.

A baseline assessment sampled 7,141 households across eight assemblies in Greater Kumasi. The results showed that 70% lived in compound houses, while only 15% were private residences.

Additionally, 11% lived in apartments or tenements, with others residing in uncompleted or improvised homes. The assessment found that 51% of these compound houses had no toilet facilities at all.

Among the remaining houses with toilets, 6% reported their facilities were not functioning properly.
