Seven people are accused of illegal mining along the Black Volta River. They appeared in the Wa District Court for ongoing investigations.
The suspects include five men and two women. They were arrested during a police operation on April 10, 2025, in Chiantanga near Dorimon.
Mr. Saeed Abdul Shakur, the Principal State Attorney for Upper West Region, confirmed their court appearance on April 13. He stated that they were arraigned to assist police investigations.
The accused are Sabugu Razak, Ibrahim Zuberu, Alex Amedzake, John Cobblah, Promise Dufe, Angelina Akpese, and Rebecca Tumawu.
During the raid, police seized equipment and vehicles used for illegal mining. This included ten Changfang mining machines and two unregistered tricycles. They also found four motorbikes—two of which were unregistered—and six student mattresses.
These items suggest that the suspects may have been living at the site. The suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.
Authorities plan to prosecute anyone found guilty after inquiries conclude. This operation is part of a larger effort against illegal mining in the region.
Communities along the Black Volta have raised concerns about pollution from illegal mining activities. The Regional Police Command is committed to protecting public health and the environment. They will intensify efforts to combat illegal mining in the area.
