‘One of us was in trouble’ – Bryan Acheampong explains Wontumi bail support

Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture, has explained his actions. He stood as surety for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Dr. Acheampong submitted documents to help secure Wontumi’s bail. This allowed Wontumi to be released from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on June 2, 2025.

After the release, Dr. Acheampong spoke to journalists. He said he acted out of solidarity and responsibility for a party member in trouble. “What is important is that one of us was in trouble,” he stated.

Chairman Wontumi had been in EOCO custody since May 27. He faced investigations for alleged fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. His bail condition was set at GH¢50 million and required two justified sureties.

Although his legal team met the bail conditions by May 30, his release was delayed. A pending High Court motion sought a review of the terms but was withdrawn on June 2. This cleared the way for his release.

Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai indicated that investigations might link Wontumi to an international crime network. Chairman Wontumi is expected to cooperate fully with authorities as investigations continue.
