‘Takeaway packs’ to be banned in Ghana – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama plans to ban Styrofoam in Ghana. He cites its major role in environmental pollution. This announcement was made on Thursday, June 5. It occurred during the launch of the 2025 national tree planting exercise.

This initiative aims to restore forest cover and combat climate change. The President described Styrofoam as a harmful pollutant. Its common use in food packaging makes it particularly concerning. He emphasized the need for alternative materials.

Manufacturers and importers should prepare for this policy change. The Ministry of Environment will soon take formal steps to ban Styrofoam's import and production.

The proposed ban is part of broader government efforts. These efforts aim to promote sustainable practices and reduce plastic waste in Ghana. The President stated, "One of the biggest polluters is Styrofoam plastics." He noted that people often discard it after using it for food.

He urged a shift towards paper packaging or aluminum foil instead. The Ministry of Environment will soon implement this ban on Styrofoam imports and production in Ghana.
