Dr. Sofo Rashid Tanko, CEO of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), welcomed a recent Supreme Court ruling. The court dismissed an injunction application from suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo. Dr. Tanko called this ruling a step toward improving the judicial system.
He spoke on Channel One TV's Breakfast Daily on Thursday, May 29. The ruling was made by a panel of five justices and showed the judiciary's independence. He noted that these judges were not appointed by the current administration.
Dr. Tanko emphasized that "the law is the law." He stated that all judges involved are experienced and impartial. He criticized Justice Torkornoo’s attempt to block executive powers as unprecedented.
The Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday, May 28, dismissing Torkornoo's injunction request. She aimed to stop a committee set up by President John Dramani Mahama from investigating her removal. Her application sought to prevent hearings until her legal challenge was resolved.
Justice Torkornoo also wanted to bar specific justices and committee members from participating in the inquiry. However, the Supreme Court's decision allows the committee to continue its work.
Dr. Tanko described her actions as attempts to undermine executive authority. He believes such moves are harmful to democratic governance. He praised the judiciary for upholding legal principles and maintaining checks and balances in government.
