Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip and South Dayi MP, has some advice for public officials. He particularly addressed members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). They should be mindful of their actions and how Ghanaians view them.
On May 17, during TV3’s KeyPoints programme, he discussed a recent controversy. This involved Acting Ghana Gold Board CEO Sammy Gyamfi and his dollar donation to Evangelist Nana Agradaa. Dafeamekpor said this incident should serve as a warning for public servants.
He explained that public officials often receive requests for help. They pay school fees, hospital bills, and light bills. Every weekend involves attending funerals where donations are expected.
Dafeamekpor emphasized the need for caution among public servants. He suggested that if they want to make donations, they should do so discreetly. Wrapping or enclosing donations can help avoid misunderstandings.
He described this situation as a learning experience for politicians, especially younger ones. Public officers sometimes make poor judgments. It is important to learn from these experiences as they navigate national politics.
Dafeamekpor praised President John Mahama for pardoning Gyamfi after the backlash. He expressed gratitude for this decision, saying it could have been worse if Gyamfi faced suspension or dismissal.
