“If your child is defiled and you’re poor, you’re finished” – Stephen Amoah laments broken justice system

Stephen Amoah, the Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, criticized Ghana’s justice system. He stated that the country’s Constitution is effectively non-functional.

Amoah spoke at the Save the Judiciary demonstration on May 5, 2025. He warned about a growing breakdown in law and order. He cited increasing political interference and lack of accountability in justice institutions.

“The Constitution is no longer working,” he said. “If police, lawyers, and courts are not functioning, you are unprotected.”

In his emotional address, Amoah urged market women to be cautious. He emphasized the risks they face under a failing justice system.

“Our mothers should rush home after selling in the market,” he advised. “If anything happens to you, there is no law to protect you.”

He added that if a child is harmed in the future, families without money will struggle. “In this country, if you are robbed, you cannot speak out,” he said.

Amoah also claimed that those who uphold justice are being punished. “Those who ensure justice are being suspended,” he stated. “They face reproach from this government.”

The Save the Judiciary protest was organized due to concerns about political interference in the judiciary. This follows recent developments involving the Chief Justice.
