“She was my only sister” – Afenyo Markin sheds tears as he recalls the passing of his sister

Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader in parliament, cried as he remembered his sister's death.

He shared that she fell ill while they were with their grandmother. His grandmother refused to take her to the hospital and relied on prayer.

In an interview with Kafui Dey, Afenyo Markin said, “Eventually, my sister became unwell. I remember it was getting worse. Grandma kept praying instead of taking her to the hospital.”

One day, his sister could no longer walk and had to crawl. She crawled and then fell on her side, which worried their grandmother.

That night, she took her to a nearby clinic across the street. Afenyo Markin struggled to share this painful memory.

He continued, “We stayed there all night. The next morning… she was my only sister.” They were told she had died.

Many people were there when they wrapped her body. Outside the house, they dug a grave for her burial.

Afterward, he was sent to live with his grandfather in his village. There was no school for him, so his grandfather took him hunting at midnight.

Afenyo Markin recalled how much his grandfather pampered him during that time. He shed tears as he relived this painful memory.
