“When Otumfuo makes a request, who am I to refuse?” – Mahama recounts how he became Prof Mills’ running mate

President John Dramani Mahama shared how Otumfuo Osei Tutu II influenced his political career. He revealed this during a recent interview.

Mahama explained that he initially declined to be running mate for the late President John Evans Atta Mills in 2008. He had decided to leave politics at that time.

Later, Prof. Mills sent a team, including Baffoe-Bonnie, to persuade him again. Mahama still said no.

Then, he received a call from Otumfuo asking to meet him in Manhyia. Mahama felt he could not refuse this request.

During their meeting, Otumfuo confronted him about refusing the position. He emphasized the importance of responding when the country calls.

Otumfuo shared his own experience of being called to serve as king. He said it was not easy but necessary.

He promised President Mills he would speak with Mahama about accepting the role. When Otumfuo returned to Accra, Mahama agreed but stated he would only serve one term.

Mahama acknowledged Otumfuo's significant role in his political journey and expressed gratitude for their friendship.
