9 rescued, 1 dead in fatal collision on Cape Coast–Takoradi highway

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) rescued nine people after a crash. One person died in the accident on the Cape Coast–Takoradi highway.

The collision happened on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. It involved a Toyota Hiace and a Zonda truck at the Elmina checkpoint.

According to the Public Relations Office, UCC fire station personnel responded quickly. They received a distress call at 3:25 p.m.

Assistant Divisional Officer I (ADO I) Halm led the rescue operation. The team secured the scene, controlled traffic, and called for more help.

“Upon receiving the distress call, our team acted immediately,” said ADO I Halm.

With support from Regional Fire Commander ACFO II Merinder Mary Attiga-Mensah, they rescued nine victims.

“All were safely handed over to the National Ambulance Service,” confirmed GNFS.

The driver of the Toyota Hiace had minor injuries. However, one passenger was unresponsive and later died at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

Preliminary findings suggest that wrongful overtaking caused the crash. The Toyota Hiace was severely damaged while the Zonda truck sustained partial damage.
