Regional Health Director Addresses Neglected Tropical Diseases
Dr. Frederick Adomako Boateng is the Ashanti Regional Director of Ghana Health Services (GHS). He stated that about 98% of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are not spiritual. These diseases are curable with proper treatment. The goal is to eliminate them by 2030 through Mass Drugs Administration and morbidity control.
Some examples of NTDs include Leprosy, Buruli Ulcer, Rabies, and Trachoma. Dr. Adomako Boateng spoke at the launch of an NTD initiative organized by Women’s Hope Foundation. The event took place at the Regional Health Directorate under the theme: “Combating Skin NTDs through Gender Equality in Ghana.”
He praised Women’s Hope Foundation for addressing discrimination against those affected by NTDs. Dr. Adomako Boateng explained that these diseases affect over a billion people worldwide living in extreme poverty. They are often neglected due to economic issues, lack of political voice, and low visibility.
Mr. Alex Adusi is the Executive Director of Women’s Hope Foundation. He emphasized that communities need basic social determinants of health to eliminate NTDs. The foundation provides clean water, employment, toilet facilities, and education on NTDs.
Nana Kofi Oppong III is the Atimatim Dikro and chairman for the occasion. He commended the foundation for raising awareness about discrimination against people with NTDs. He noted that fighting against NTDs is challenging and urged stakeholders to support this cause.
The chief advised families not to abandon those with NTDs but to help them access treatment instead of neglecting or stigmatizing them.
