A-G to prosecute gov't appointees for breach of new code of conduct where necessary

The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has made a strong statement. Political appointees who break the Code of Conduct will face serious consequences. They may be dismissed and could also face criminal prosecution.

Dr. Ayine spoke during an interview on May 5, 2025. This was after President John Dramani Mahama launched the Code of Conduct for Political Appointees in Accra.

He emphasized that the President expects appointees to behave properly. Those who do not will face disciplinary actions. “If you breach the code, you get disciplined,” he said.

Dr. Ayine added that if an appointee commits a crime, dismissal is not enough. He explained that criminal conduct would lead to further legal action.

“It should be possible for the Attorney-General to take action,” he stated. This ensures that courts impose necessary criminal sanctions.

The Attorney-General assured that enforcement of the code will be fair and consistent. “I will investigate and prosecute any appointee who crosses the line,” he declared.

He criticized a system where only past officials are prosecuted while current ones escape punishment. “It doesn’t make sense for past appointees to be prosecuted while present ones go free,” he said.

Dr. Ayine urged government officials to maintain discipline and avoid misconduct. He stressed the importance of following the path defined by the President.

“I don’t want to have to investigate my own colleagues,” he concluded.
