On June 3rd, Dr. Hanna Bisiw-Kotei visited mining sites in Nkomteng. She is the Administrator of the Mineral Development Fund (MDF). The visit aimed to assess the environmental impact of mining activities.
Dr. Kotei was joined by the local Assemblyman, a site foreman, and security personnel. During the visit, authorities arrested two Indian nationals and ten others for illegal mining. Many miners fled upon seeing the team.
After the operation, Dr. Kotei expressed concern about environmental degradation from illegal mining. She promised that MDF would work with MPs and MMDCEs to hold offenders accountable. They aim to strengthen enforcement efforts against illegal activities.
Dr. Kotei emphasized the need for public education on illegal mining's dangers. She mentioned severe health risks like kidney and liver failure from toxic exposure. Tragically, two lives have already been lost in mining incidents.
This visit is part of MDF's ongoing efforts to monitor mining activities. The goal is to ensure sustainable and responsible resource exploitation across the country.
