A/R: 5 robberies in 4 months as Nyankyerenease residents live in fear

Residents of Nyankyerenease in the Kwadaso Municipality are living in fear. Armed attacks on homes have become a recurring issue.

Criminals armed with pump-action guns, pistols, and machetes break into homes. They rob residents of cash and valuables.

Luv FM’s Clinton Yeboah visited the community to speak with victims. They reported at least five armed incidents this year alone.

Nyankyerenease is a quiet area with closely-knit settlements. However, rising robbery cases have left many residents fearful.

In just one week, two armed robbery incidents occurred. Isaac Kofi Koomson is one of the victims.

He described his terrifying encounter with two armed men. “I woke up to two giant men demanding cash and valuables,” he said. The robbers took over 26 thousand in cash, along with shoes and phones.

In the same week, unknown robbers dragged an unregistered car from a garage. Other residents feel traumatized and live in constant fear.

Kwesi (not his real name), a seventeen-year-old, shared his experience from months ago. “I was traumatized since December last year,” he said. He struggled to sleep for three months due to fear of attacks.

Another victim expressed her anxiety when her husband is away. “I live in fear of them coming to harm me,” she said.

Some residents find their window nets slashed and valuables missing each morning. They believe that outsiders think Newsite residents are wealthy targets for robbery.

“People assume we are high-income earners because it’s Newsite,” they explained. This perception has made their community dangerous and frightening.

Community members are calling for increased surveillance to restore safety. They feel that a volunteer security group has not effectively addressed the problem.

“Every day you sleep thinking your windows will be cut,” one resident said. “We need heightened surveillance here; the police should help.”
